Kenyan Edward Tabut, 30, now living and training in Coon Rapids, Minn., won the Miami Half-Marathon in Miami, Fla., Sun., Feb. 2 in a time of 1:06:44.
His fellow Kenyan George Towett, 29, who’s based in Hebron, Ky., was second in 1:08:29 and Cesar Lizano Cedeno, 31, of Costa Rica third in 1:08:48.
Tabut elected the run the half-marathon in Miami after failing to finish a marathon in Des Moines, Iowa the last time he ran. Now he plans to focus on the marathon in hopes of qualifying for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. By then he obviously hopes to be an American citizen.
Shannon Miller, 29, of New York City ran 1:21:07 to win the women’s race.
Yolymar Pineda, 28, of Venezuela was second in 1:21:59 and Angela Brito, 28, of Miami, Fla., third in 1:22:37.
Miller, who ran a personal best of 1:17 for the half-marathon in Houston two weeks ago, now lives in the Bronx, New York, but used to live in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. She ran with a lead pack that included eventual second-place finisher Pineda before picking up the pace after six miles and establishing a lead she never relinquished.
“I love running in the heat,” she said afterwards. “I’ve been training in Florida for years. I love the sunshine. I love the Sunshine State. I love the palm trees, (the) great weather, and (the) great atmosphere.”
