| Fitness Statement | I have been competing for close to 35 years. Have been a National Champion twice,Pacific Area Champion 4 times .I've probably got 75-80,000 miles on my legs and am proud of the fact they still carry me through a daily run.I still run between 35- 50+ miles a week depending on my goals.Racing less but still like a challenge on occasion. |
11.3 mile run @ 1:28:45/ 7:52 pace.Felt best at the end which is better than the reverse.
Easy 3 mile recovery run before taking off for points north. Stetching.
Have a good trip up north and keep us posted on your workouts...50 miles plus!!!!!11.28 miles on levees this morning under almost perfect conditions. Some cloud cover, light wind, low 60 degrees. So I figured I should take advantage of this by giving a solid effort. 1:28:02/ 7:49 pace. Started out at 9:00 flat and finished with 6:29 mile pace for last .28 .Felt better today than yesterday.
We have our good days and our fair days. Today was a good day for you!!!! And you do love your levees...5.7 miles total running. 2 mile warmup with strides, 5k @ 20:46/6:41 pace, .5 mile cooldown. Not a particularly memorable race today as for some reason I was unable to take advantage of the mostly downhill out portion of the race. Held my own well enough coming back uphill but by then everyone was to far away to catch. Disappointing to say the least. I did manage to beat Arturo who seemed to have a harder time of it than I did. 3 guys in my age group that I beat at Zippy's beat me today and 72 year old Hans Schmidt managed to get by me at the turnaround. He was very happy to beat me for some reason (the guy's 7 years older than me!!).The only good thing that came out of today's event was the age graded is 80.02% to keep my streak alive. Cutting it alittle to close for comfort though. I need to run races on Sundays as being on my feet until 7 o'clock last night at work doesn't seem to work well in terms of turnaround time.
Bill, I figured about 20 - 30 seconds slower than Zippys.
Knowing how hard you race, my guess is that the hill coming back is just too tough. Getting out fast at our age is tough too. Good run though regardless. The hill makes this a random result course.
Bill, of course Hans was glad to beat you. You are an iconic runner. Now he can brag about until you beat him the next time around. ;-)
At least you got over 80%...I feel short by just a bit...I wonder on hind sight which race was faster? You had hills for hall the race...I had wind for half the race? In any case, good job!!!3 mile run and 4x1 block strides. Felt good and am ready for tomorrow.
Bob and I drove the course and stopped at the same deli for a burger. That return section looks tough but I think you'll do well. You're good on the hills.
You are going to do well tomorrow...I feel it. Bank the first half and just hang on...sub 20 of the year!!!!
Brian Pilcher just e-mailed me about the course. I guess Mark Wintz gave him my e-mail as a source of info. I really won't know what it' like until I run it!!5.1 mile run out on levees. Stretching. Beautiful morning!!
Bill, have noticed in your workout posts that you include stretching consistently. Do you think that has helped play an important roll in the outstanding running you are still doing in your mid 60's. I noted the importance in avoiding injuries in a recent tip, but do you feel that it has also been a factor in maintaining your speed? What type of stretching are you doing? Wish I would follow my own advice...my return to running has been a real challenge.
Most of my stretching is for the hamstrings, calves and lower back. I do this after my runs. Somewhere long ago I read it was better to stretch after a workout than before when the tendons are cold. It feels good to me and I've been doing it since I can remember. You can hurt yourself overstretching so some care should be taken.
I agree with that bill I read the same thing and have only been doing stretches after my run on basicly the same muscle groups. I can say this from experiance before I started streching it took longer to recover from my runs. Since I have been streching recovery has sped up alot.
As for adding to my overall speed, I think it lessens the chances of injury when running fast. So indirectly it adds to ones speed by allowing more of it to be done.
Thanks Bill. Probably the only time pre-workout stretching is really needed would be on faster interval training, or other training runs of high intensity where the initial part of the run can't serve as a warm-up. Did some stretching after my run last night...you have motivated me.5.1 mile run with 7x 300-400 meter intervals. Stretching, weight training.
Do you do this like a Farklet run? These intervals is for sure helping your speed. You will be done under 19:45 soon...8.6 mile run out on levees at easy pace Warm.
Yeah..warm is right. It said low 60's at Foothill attack at 10 am but it felt like 70's.3.4 mile run over the Portola Valley 5k course. 1st time I've run two workouts in the same day in many years. Wanted to get a feel for this new course before we race on it next Saturday. Rich and I drove it a couple of weeks ago and decided then it was a challenging race course. Running it today only proves that fact. Fast out with almost all downhill but what goes down must come back up. Sure helps to know ahead of time what that is going to feel like. It's a course to race those around you and not to concern yourself with the time.
I am now having second thoughts about running this next Saturday...I can't afford to do another slow 5k...I need a sub 20...good job Bill...
For me Bob it might be a good course to beat some guys that are tougher on flat courses. I am always confident in my uphill running abilities from running cross-country. I'm going to have to put my head down and grind out as fast a return as I can. I've already got one sub 20 in the books so now division place is a goal. Good luck tomorrow!!5.1 mile run incorporating usual fartlek workout. Stretching, weight training. Hurt so good!!!!
Add A New Secret Training Idea
I'll be camping with a friend up above Ukiah on the Eel River Monday thru Thursday. Hope to get some good solid training in while there. So the reason you won't see any posts for a few days doesn't mean I'm not out there working hard. Maybe another 50 mile week?
I really like that area of California...have a good week of training! There is internet up that way and I hope you will keep us informed!
Went to the Payton Jordan Track Meet yesterday and watched Lopez Lomong run the fasted second to last lap in 5000 meter history. Unfortunately he thought it was the last lap. After stopping at the finish line and being reminded by the entire crowd there was one more lap he commenced running and still won. Amazing Stuff!!
I really wanted to watch this meet but some things came up. I but that last lap was a killer for Lopez...racing hard to the tape only to find you have one additional lap to go...wow, that hurts just thinking about it!!!
Strong 60-69 division at Zippys this year. 2 men under 19, 8 men under 20, 13 men under 21 ( including 1 70 ) ,18 men under 22 minutes. Carlsbad this year had 1 man under 18, 3 men under 19, 7 men under 20, 14 men under 21 ,16 men under 22. Way to go Northern California.
Calsbad did have 1 70 year old under 21 and 3 70 year olds total under 22.
And a 72 year old in the mid 20 minute range. The running boom warriors keep on going.
This could have been the best field 60 plus for a 5k in the country? and that is even when a few of us did not run as well as we could have. Does anyone know of a race that had so many 60 plus?
Last year's Masters 5k Championships was a deeper field but the runners were from all over the country.
Sorry to hear about your lose of equipment .How ironic that I had my entire Jeep stolen in 1975. It was the 1st new vehicle I'd ever had. I remember I was not a happy camper.
I am glad to hear you were able to rent some gear!!
I just downloaded a photo from the SacTown 10 Mile Race 3 weeks ago. I was afraid it wouldn't download because it's black and white with a sepia toner. I think it came out nice.
Nice photo.
You are ready to run some great races...I hope I can keep up!
After extensive research on a number of age graded web sites I believe a 17:50 for 2.75 miles is a 6:25 per mile pace at 82.29% , not 5:29 pace , 79.58% that our website comes up with.
I checked the age grading site I use. Looks like it grades to a 5 minute pace back in the day. Very nice run.
Bill, we just checked and the pace is 6:29 which would give you a 20:06 5k if you kept running the same pace. There is an issue with some odd distances not just with our site but others too. However, we think the 82.29% is the correct one. We are updating...you are getting close to a sub 20! Going to be a good race Sunday...
You're right Bob. It is 5:29 pace. I think why it comes up on our club calculator as 5:25 pace is because Walt has tried to build in the difficulty of the course. It's mostly uphill 1st mile with a gate you must go around, then a narrow path with low hanging trees and tree roots to negotiate, then a sharp uphill, then a whole mile gradual downhill before a mile up Fruitvale to the finish (Nasty little uphill just before the finish). I feel good about the effort.
That sounds like a tough course..is it giong to take 19:45 to beat you on Sunday?
Wouldn't that be nice!
I am going to run sub 20 Sunday but that'll be the time for the two miles I am going to run out and back from start line to the one mile point.
Bob, listened to your phone interview with Dr. Dahlkoetter last night. Very interesting. Runners World was a big part of my running back then.
Bob,if your feeling o.k. after your race on Saturday ( your ankle in particular ) and want to run my levees run Sunday let me know. It's 8.6 miles out and back plus other loops you can add on if you wish. We can run what ever pace you want. JoAnn will be there too. Bring Mike.
Sounds great. I am hoping my ankle is not going to be a problem. I am going to need 10 miles to make my 30 miles for the week...and this would be my last long run before the half the next Saturday...
We start at the trail head just north of the Sunnyvale dump sight/ sanitation center . It is off Mathilda/Caribbean around the curve from the Yahoo campus which is just south of Moffet Field. You'll take a left at Borregas from Carribbean. We start at 10 am if that's o.k. You have my cell #.
What's you next target race, Bill. Zippy's?
Zippy's will be my next race. It's a good course overall but challenging with the ups and downs . To break 20 minutes is a goal but won't be easy on this course. Still it's in my thoughts.
That's a good goal for Zippy...I want to get under 20 there too! A lot of people say it is a fast course but...
But...... You have to press from the gitgo and not let up!!!!
Got back from a week camping just north of Santa Barbara last night to find pouring rain at home. Weather was fine down south. JoAnn and I were on the go the whole time we were there. If we were'nt running we were walking. JoAnn also did some bike riding and swam one day when not running. I ran all 5 days for a total of 40 miles. Monday JoAnn and I ran together on flat trail for 6.2 miles. Tuesday was a hilly 10 miles along the coast and up a side road. Wednesday was 5 miles with 15 hill repeats in the campground. Thursday was a flat 8.7 miles. Friday was the same hilly 10 miles. All in all a very solid week so far.Today was the usual 5 mile interval workout. So a long run tomorrow should give me somewhere around 57 miles for the week. Good confidence builder for the 10 mile race in 2 weeks.
Running vacations are great. Hawaii, 1981 on Maui I ran 72 miles in 7 days.
Sounds like you and JoAnn had a great trip. I love trips like that...
All you fellow athletes out there who I've known for awhile will get a kick out of the photo I downloaded to my photo gallery. Jim Barker, I know you can relate. Bob, I know it's not actually a running related photo but it does show a runner with a potential future. I could have never imagined what the later years would behold.
great photo, Bill.
I like the photos. You have a good eye...
Sunday afternoon JoAnn and I will be travelling down to the Santa Barbara area for a weeks vacation. We camp at El Capitan State Park 10mi. north of Goleta. There is a beautiful bike trail between our campground and Refugio State Park to the north that is a magnificent out and back rolling 5 miles along the ocean.Hope to run 50 miles or more while there.
My son went to UCSB. Used to go down for visits. Running was great! Of course we stayed in high class hotels but still the running was great!
Have a fun vacation...50 miles is a solid goal!!!
The Age Grading Calculator doesn't seem to be working the last few days
You may have moved beyond the upper age it can calculate. ;-)
Bill, our webmaster needs to do an update and he will on Monday. Wow, you have more races than me right now. But...
Just completed my Club past race list. After over 2 weeks of tranfering the data from a spiral notebook to the website I've ended up with 642 entries. They include road races, track races, cross-country races, WVJS club races and the Foothill Fun Run races I'd like to personally thank Bob Anderson and his excellent webmaster for creating this opportunity for me to view my race history (1977-2012) from a totally different perspective, i.e. top 25 races in different distances, top 100 age graded ,etc.
This is a great idea. My log books are gathering dust in a box in my garage.
You have run some amazing times. Everything is now age-graded. We will be adding some more features too. You currently have run the most races...
Rich,What would be the conversion in seconds for a 5 mile time to 8km based on a 5:15 to 5:30,5:40 pace. Want to add to my top times list which is based on 8k. Thanks,Bill Dunn
Bill, it is roughly 9-10 seconds. If you ran a 5:15 pace for 5 miles your time is 26:15. Your 8k equivalent is 26:06. At 5:30 pace your five miler is 27:30 and the 8k is 27:20. At 5:40 your five miler is 28:20 and your 8k is 28:10. I hope this helps.
Thanks Rich. I thought it was around 10 seconds. I've run in my lifetime.way more 5 milers than 8ks
I keep thinking back go my 25:45 five miler. That was a 25:36 8k.
How did I ever do that? I am like you Bill. Way more fives. .
