| Comments | I have been running for nearly 50 years and I love it just as much as I did when I first got started. I am running 25 or more races in 2011 and six will be half marathons. I have run 10 marathons over the years but not in the last 25 years. My body likes the 10-mile to half marathon the best. However, I do enjoy racing 5k and 10k too! To Celebrate 50 years of running and racing, I am planning on running 50 races in 2012 and I hope to average at least 75% age graded. My goal is to averge 80% or more but it is a lot of races. |
| Fitness Statement | I run or walk everyday and at least 30 miles per week. To race well I do need to push it at least twice during the week which I have not been doing. This is going to change. |

Ran three miles with Mike during lunch. We took it easy. My legs are feeling fresh and I am going to be ready to race 12k on Sunday. Bay to Breakers here I come. Picking up my number in the morning. Going up to night to SF...Catherine and I love spending time in the city...
I ran and walked three miles at lunch...decided an easy day eould be best...
Ran and walked three miles today. My knee and ankle is bothering me a bit and I did not want to push it. I did push it yesterday on the downhill but it was only for a half mile. In a couple of weeks I will need to push it like that for five miles. Glad I did it. Booked another race today. The 10 Miler Sept 30 in Eugene. It falls right between two halfs.
Mike and I ran 10k (6.2 miles) this afternoon...this new course has a good half mile downhill on it. It is going to be good training for Fontana since that half marathon drops 2,000 feet in the first six miles before it levels out. Fontana is coming up in less than three weeks. I want to get under 1:30 on that one for sure.
My hamstring is feeling just a little funny and I didn't want to push it. I put on a hot patch and ran/walked 3.3 miles. Then another 1.8 miles later in the day. Mike's hamstring is bothering him a bit too and he joined me on both workouts...
I know...it did not make any sense at all...it was just one of those things that just happened without any thought ahead of time...Ran DSE Mothers Day.5k in SF...there is two miles of gravel on the new course but it was flat. Add a 10 mile per hour wind and guess what? Times were not fast. I ran 20:53. Felt good however. 6:27 first mile and 36 second last .1. Good group of people.
I went for my morning runwithdog and husband this morning and came across the racers on part of my route along Crissy Fields heading towards East Beach! Was this the race you did? Great time.
To bad about that wind. Still about 45 seconds under a 7 pace. Adds to your cushion.
Ran and walked a second time with Mike just now. We walked a mile and three ran three...did some farlet along the way...felt good!Ran three miles with Mike in the middle of his run. He ran 10 miles on a new course we set up. It is a tough one and offers everything....Race number 21 in the morning in SF. A DSE race...it is a flat course but it does have gravel...Hope to get close to 20 minutes...
I ran an easy 1.8 miles this morning. It was so nice out. I could have ran longer but I want to make sure I am going to have fresh legs on Sunday for race 21...5k in San Francisco.
Ran twice today. I did 1.8 miles easy before lunch with Rich. Then I ran with Mike after work. We did four miles easy (like 9:30/mile pace) and then I pushed the last two miles. My last mile was 6:32. Felt strong and was not wearing my racing flats.

My legs seemed tired so I did not push it. In the past I have and this is when I have injuried myself. So I ran an easy 4.1 miles around the golf course. Going to do a mile or two walk later.
Add A New Secret Training Idea
Heading up to SF for a couple of nights. Catherine and I like any reason to spend a few nights in the city. Racing the Bay To Breakers on Sunday is a good enough reason...
This was a strange day...lots going on but really did not focus on anythng...how about you?
Mike is running nine miles...I am going to run two miles with him on the bike trail...5k race in SF in the morning...hope to get close to 20 minutes...
I think you will do it!
You got this :)
Your turn Bob. Go get it!!
You got the perfect race day. 50's, no real wind and a flat course.
Sounds great
Big decision for this weekend...do I run a tough 5k course on Saturday with a lot of good competition or a low key 5k race on Sunday that is an easier course. I have not seen the tougher course but looking at it tomorrow with Rich...
If this is actually open to a vote, I would go with the Sunday race at this point in your 50 race challenge. Particularly when you look what is ahead the next month of your schedule. Also, you have mentioned that your legs have been tired in your workout posts this week. Anybody else want to vote on this?
We can discuss today when we drive the Saturday course.
I know both of them very well and if I were looking for a faster time it would be the flat fast course in SF.
See you around noon.
I kind of agree with Barry on this one. You may want to run on sunday that way you can still compete with less effort. Use it as a recovery race sort of :). If you race on Satarday aginsts really tough compatition and your leggs are already tired you may push yourself to hard to achive a win or a time you wanted and that will defenitly put a ding on the motivation.
Go with the faster course. Little Brother knows best!
Bob, I'll do the tougher course and let you know how it was if you decide to go up to S.F.
I have made up my mind...I am going to do the easier couse in SF...details in A Long Run Diaries....GOOD LUCK Bill. You like tough courses much better than I...
Up early for the Ave of the Giants half marathon...hoping to run 1:31 something or better...never know in a half...i am going to go out strong...it's a beautiful course...i like this distance...
Going to do a little run with Mike in a few...Ferndale is such a neat little place...then running with Katie on the course through the Redwoods...going to look great for A Long Run...I am thinking about 1:31 for tomorrow...who else is racing this weekend?
We just arrived in Ferndale which is 4 hours north of SF and 30 minutes north of the start of the Ave of the Giants half marathon I am running Sunday. Mike and I are doing a training run in a few. Waitman and Catherine are going to film it. This little town is amazing...
One of the cutest Bed and Breakfasts I've ever seen is in Ferndale, several streets back from the main drag. Good racing Sunday Bob!!
We are at the Victorian Inn...the one you are talking Bill is no longer in business...we stayed there three years ago...it is cool here...
After 19 races of 50 for the year, I am averaging 80.04% age graded. My average pace per mile for the 114.97 miles I have raced is 6:57. My goal is to average under 7 minutes. I still need to schedule 12 more races for a total of at least 73.4 miles. I have 8 more half marathons to run and I really don't want to add any more. I would like to add another 5k but I will need to find a 15k or 10 miler to make up the distance if all the others are 10ks. Lots to consider...
Off to run race number 19 of the year...Great Race that starts in Saratoga, CA...want to get under 27 minutes...last year I ran 27:21...
Boston Marathon photos and an article are posted. Check out how our Ujena Fit Club member Christine Kennedy finished. She handled the heat well. Way to go!
We were double checking the results for the Honda LA Marathon and found some issues with some runners over the age of 60. They had several age-group winners who performances were over 100% age-graded. Yet from what we could find, most of these runners had not run a race before. We are not accepting some of these results and have made changes to reflex the real age-group winnes. The question we have is what happened?
Good luck to all our members who are running the Boston Marathon. I hope you have a great race!!
Thanks Bob. It was very ugly for me thanks to the heat, but at least I finished. I will hang my medal on the wall but will always be reminded that it was my worst marathon ever.
In Manhattan, Kansas...running with my Barry and some other people...a recovery run...need to reach 30 miles for the week too...
Up early in Overland Park...going to be leaving in 45 minutes for Kansas City to run the Rock The Parkway Half Marathon....the weather suppose to have been bad but it is going to be nice...maybe a litte warm the last few miles but not bad...did not sleep well last night but that happens sometimes before races...good day yesterday...spent some time at my HS...went to houses I grew up in...lots of photos will be uploading later...hope to run 1:31 today...will let you know!
We are in Overland Park, Kansas. It is really windy...but it is not raining. Going to be doing a lot of filming for A Long Run tomorrow. This is where I grew up. I started Distance Running News here that I renamed in 1970 to Runners World...night
hope the rain holds off and you get some great shots!.
