| Comments | I have been running for nearly 50 years and I love it just as much as I did when I first got started. I am running 25 or more races in 2011 and six will be half marathons. I have run 10 marathons over the years but not in the last 25 years. My body likes the 10-mile to half marathon the best. However, I do enjoy racing 5k and 10k too! To Celebrate 50 years of running and racing, I am planning on running 50 races in 2012 and I hope to average at least 75% age graded. My goal is to averge 80% or more but it is a lot of races. |
| Fitness Statement | I run or walk everyday and at least 30 miles per week. To race well I do need to push it at least twice during the week which I have not been doing. This is going to change. |

I was going to do a run today but decided to walk three miles instead. Actually I also run short on time which didn't help either. 12 days until the Double in Overland Park!
My normal Monday...walked three miles today splitting it up with lunch in the middle. Sore from yesterday but feeling good. I am a runner...I am getting past this situation! Running tomorrow...

Can't believe it...I ran a half marathon training run this morning on Los Gatos Trail with Michael...ran 1:52:21...leg is holding up! I just started running and kept going..
Good news finally...ran 3.2 miles at 8:53/mile pace. Best mile was 8:24. I soaked my leg in our pool for an hour before hand. I think it helped. Feel really out of shape but it is a start.

Another walking day but my leg is getting better. I am hoping to start running Sunday. I want to run six miles. It is going to be tight but I am still thinking I will be able to run the Overland Park Double...now how fast? That's another story...the photo? Me doing what I need to be doing...running!!!!!
Ten miles of walking today broken up into three parts. I am hoping to run six miles this weekend. Leg is better but not more than 80% yet. Running out of time to train for OP Double.
Got a good sports massage yesterday. This situation I have comes and goes. One minute it seems like it is solved and then the next minute it feels weird again. I need to get this situation behind me so I can start training. I am running (I wish) out of time. Walked 2 miles early and 3 miles with Rich at lunch.
After Jan. 3rd I'll be able to join you guys for that walk to Tom's and back.
You'll be welcome Bill. But we take turn paying. You will be using up your retirement really quickly. Ha ha
Well Bob I know how you feel, I've been unable to train for going on 6 weeks. After my run Sunday I had another retinal tear Monday, they lasered it back in place. The Doc. told me to take it easy for two weeks.
That is not good Brad. It just is not a good feeling when we can't run.... Are you going to be able to run the Double in Overland Park? I am still thinking positive...but I have not run in three weeks.
Yes I'll run, I'm staying at the Double tree, and ready to do this. I see you had a good Fathers Day. I will not be at my best, but I can start running again this weekend. I'll set a base line for the Double in Manhattan in Nov. can't wait to start training again. After running four miles yesterday I decided to take it easy today. I walked five miles. Actually my leg is bothering me and I don't want to go back to ground zero. Hope I didn't over do it yesterday!
I met Michael at the Los Gatos Creek Trail this morning and I was planning on walking six miles. Michael was running 13 miles like what we have been doing the last seven weeks. At about the half mile mark I decided to try to run. At first it was not much but I kept with it. Before this morning I had not run more than one step in 13 days. But I kept going and ended up running four miles. In fact one mile was 8:52. My leg does not feel perfect, not even close, right now but I am glad I was able to do this. I ran another mile off and on. I covered ten miles in total. This brings my total to 35 miles so far for the week. I am a happy guy!!!
Good news Bob. Be careful not to do to much to soon. We are all so inclined when something like this happens tp us.Day 13 of no running...I am going crazy. Am I every going to be able to run again? I walked 6.2 miles today. No matter what I am going to get in 30 miles of walking...and soon I will be running!!!!
I have been running for 51 years. I have run thousands of races. I ran
50 races in 2012. I ran the Pleasanton Double Road Race in December
2012, the first offcial Double Road Race in America. The Double is not
just another race. The halftime between the legs (10k then 5k 105 minutes
later) makes it a totally different event. Are you ready to experience a
new feeling? What are you doing to do during our halftime?
The Overland Park Double Road Race is the second Double in America. I
will be there on the 10k starting line and then in the recovery zone with
you. When we step to the starting line of the 5k our legs are not going
to want to race again. But we will lift our legs and move forward. At
the end you will feel something special. You have completed this new
challenge. You have completed a Double Road Race.
You will become one of the first runners in the world to have achieved
this new challenge. I will be there right by your side. This is history
in the making. You are now a Double Road Racer.
The Overland Park Double Road Race 10k first leg starts at 7:30am June
30th in Corporate Woods. Have you told your running buddies about the
Double? Or maybe you are afraid? It's new...it's different...and maybe you
want to keep it a secret. But why not share? The secret is going to get
out anyway.
I am a lifetime runner who started running in Kansas in 1962. I went to
Broadmore junior high, then Shawnee Mission West, and then Kansas State.
I started running in 1962 and it became my life. Nothing was more
important. When I watched the 1964 Olympics on our black and white tv in
Overland Park I was inspired even more. Billy Mills is still the only
american to win the Olympic Gold Medal in the 10,000. I watched and I was
inspired.
Billy Mills went to school in Kansas. He is my hero. He inspired me. So
much so that I started a magazine at age 17 that became Runner's World. I
built it to a circulation of 435,000 during the 18 years I published it.
Runner's World helped the running boom grow.
It is only fitting that Billy is our guest of honor. He is our official
starter. Billy is celebrating his 75th birthday with us and the Kansas
City Track Club is hosting his birthday party Friday night June 28th. You
are invited to attend.
Keep this our secret. If you finish the Double Road Race, you will be
awarded a unique two-sided medal and if you place in the top five per five
year age-group we will give you an even bigger medal. Billy Mills will
personally give it to you. And if you place in the top three 40-49,
50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus we are going to give you money. Yes, real money.
$5,000 in total is going to be given out in Overland Park.
It is going to be a special weekend in Overland Park. Kansas is where I
grew up and I am looking forward in seeing you there.
Good running to you. If you would like to be part of a Ujena Fit Club
Elite Racing team let me know. If you think you are going to win prize
money, you have to sign up at the Ujena Fit Club. It is free, of course.
Even you don't think you are going to win prize money you should sign up.
Great way to stay in touch.
I had not run for three weeks because of a leg issue. But I am back. I
ran 13 miles Sunday on Father's Day, then had breakfast with my son. I
am going to be ready to race June 30th. How about you?
Getting ready to meet my son Michael in Los Gatos and run the longest I have run in three weeks...I hope six!
Who else is racing this weekend?
I (The Running Joke Cartoon) will do the Run in the Name of Love', in beautiful Carmel CA, on Father's Day
Good luck John...

Off to run the Los Gatos Trail...planning on doing 13 miles again this weekend. Training for the Double season....10 Doubles in 26 weeks! Have to be ready...
Best of luck to all Bay to Breakers runners...WE RUN STRONG...
Good luck to everyone running the Bay To Breakers 12k in the morning. Wished I was running...
I have been running 13-16 miles on the weekend the last few weeks and I am loving it...
Back home...I still can not believe what happened in Boston. What kind of person or group of people do such a cowardly act?
We are all okay. Can not believe what happened. I was waiting for Michael to finish when the bombs went off. I found out later that he had just finished four minutes before. Our hearts go out to thosed who were killed or injuries. 4500 runners were not allowed to finish...
Bob, so glad to hear that you, Michael
Amen. You guys are okay. This is really very upsetting.
Glad to hear you're all okay.
Boston is an amazing city...Michael and I are ready to get this thing going...good luck to all Ujena Fit Club members running including Fernando Cabada and Christine Kennedy...lets do it!
Good luck to you, Michael, Fernando, Christine and everyone else running Boston tomorrow!
Good luck, all. Hope each of you hits your goal. Run smart.
Good luck to Daniel Tapia also! Another fit club member. Think he is running...the second placer in the Double at Pleasanton.
We are almost done with our new Double Road Race site. Going live on Thursday afternoon. Been very time consuming...
We are going to pick one Ujena Fit Club member of the month starting in April. This will be a member who is posting regularly, running races and posting them, and helping us spread the word. .
