Subsequently joined the good culturre & fellowship of WVTC. Ran the March 1971 WVTC Marathon, inc. Boston for the Army following month & got toknow Eric Segal somwhat; and 50+ marathons later, including ultras, score of shorter races, and 2 X Wide World of Sports "Ironman" Triathlon at Kona, am still running 6 times weekly at distances 4-8 miles, and doing a 2+ hour cycle ru;n to Morgan Hill. Did 4.5 miles against the So SJose hills--Coyote Crk swollen & 2nd highest in 36 years.!
Power walk in the heat-Coyote Crk--even the deer & wild pigs were in slow motion.!
4 mile power walk &10 mile bike pm ride.. Encountered 1st defensive rattler on Coyote Bike Trail today.
Power walk ; yesterday's walk of 5+ miles in 91 degree heat really left me dizzy.. Recent experience at Oly Trials at Eugene was like a Nat. Reunion of runners & superb in spit of 4 days of rain.!! Great tie-in with Neta Prefontaine & family of the Prefontaine legacy & big hello to famed Coach Bill Dellinger at the Bowerman Bldg; also a Seniors Wed. PM 100 Meter Dash on track; finished a secure last with the crowd cheering nonetheless !!
Three Mile power walk, hip pain almost gone..
5 mile power walk; hip less bothersome..
Are you getting in some miles? I like to mix power walking and running. Maybe it is a aging thing?Powerwalked 3.5, hip still painful..approached by 2 courious wild pigs. (youngsters!)
3 mile power walk in Boise; frigid & clear air..
How cold was it? It was 38 degrees out here when I left for our Double Training Run. Has warmed up.Power walk; flu easing up somewhat..
Staying in power-walk motion in spite of viral cold incurred after supporting Iowa "50" Class Reunion. Won't comment about jolly classmates' size about 2x beyond mine.!!
Testing sore ankle..
It was good to see you Saturday. Looks like you got through the Double okay.Pleasant, but somewhat harried run to rtn home in time to get daughter to college.
Easy run; fitting post by Steve Hoag (MN) to Pre, remembering 31 MAY, 1975.(fACEBOOK).
Powerwalking& shuffling; quads still very stiff from Idaho Mtn Half-Marathon on Sat.
5 mile run/shuffle; encountered several Asian runners about to bash a beautiful corn snake on the paved path; stopped the imminent execution, gently picked the meter+ snake up, set it safely off the path & reassured them it was harmless; maybe they are still murmuring...!
2 miles walking & the anaerobics of lifting, carrying items helping move a family...
evening bike ride, refreshing after 5 am wake-up for fund-raiser at Flea Mkt
10 k in Pac Grove, terrific wind & rains, but temps almost tropical; still on 1.5 legs..!
Good seeing you yesterday Jim. Then all of a sudden it started raining hard!Ride to Morgan Hill- tough wind going, much easier returning..! no hamstring pain..
Moving slowly thru the fog on Coyote Creek; at least the birds & squirrels frisky, where is everyone else ?!
Limping thru again, fresh air was wonderful.!
One more shuffle thru the miles with this nagging hamstring... patience, patience!
4 miles brisk walking
One mile walk on hill, then 6+ miler on Coyote Crk bike path; perfect temps--Hawaiian style--no shirt.!
Slow run, but some energy level.!
At least you are running. Speed does not always matter as we get older...
Thanks Bob, Hope you are mending well. So true, motion is what counts.! Funny how even a slowed pace, however can elicit the sensation of speed....
Best,
JimRun along Boise River together with twin bro Ron... it actually flowed!
VEry Hot, slow run, somewhat dizzy afterwards.
Be careful in the heat. Be sure to drink enough water. Even more important at our age!A thermal buster! just ran/shuffled the distance on Coyote Crk; lots of cyclists, just a few of us Spartans..!
slow run/shuffle; just had cataract procedure; docs advise against running for one month..
Take care of yourself and God speed...you can always power walk on hills...that's as good as running on the flats. An enjoyable short run; only wish there had been the time chance to have made it down to Lover's Point today; imagine conditions were ideal; many invigorating miles covered there during my days at the Def. Language Institute
Easy 3 miler, ankle pain, probably need new shoes.
Take care of that ankle. Are we going to be seeing you in Pacific Grove May 11th?6 miler, felt decent energy level, albeit somewhat fatigued as a now solo dad addressing the needs of two teenage daughters.!
Great temps, easy run.
Enjoyable 7 miler against hill Hawaiian style (sans chamise-w/o camisa/shirt)!
Ran a 4 this am against the hills; then 5 on treadmill tonight; definitely favor God's Creation.!
Brisk 4 into the wind.
Slow but sure, 9 miler against hills, perfect temps.
Ran a 7 before Church, then 3+ on a treadmill at Club One this pm. Pleasantly tired!!
Enjoyable temps for the regular Coyote Crk route, look forward to good bike ride tomorrow.
strong and slow, but grateful just to be in motion.!
Keep it moving no matter what! Are you guys going to be in Pleasanton? A Long Run premiere Friday night Dec 20 inPleasanton! Hope you guys can make it.On the bikepath before church to test my ankle and back recovery condition.
sore back from landscaping, but need to get some aerobic benefit. fresh air here in Boise..
Relaxed 5 miler; been out-of-state in Idaho past month; little chance to log anything, however averaging 4-5 miles daily in the dry heat. Beautiful running along the Boise River by Boise State.1
Trudged thru a 6 this am, still fatigued from Idaho return drive & heat.
Energy returning, felt good, also ran the family dog a while.
Glad to hear it...hope you and your brother will be able to join us August 24 for the San Jose Double!!!!! Or just run our San Jose 5k...haven't seen you since Pleasanton!!!!in W Coast Scrabble tournament; noon break to get out to Campbell bike path.
5 k race, Sacramento, 4th in Div at 27:28; twin bro Ron was 2nd in 23:58, great weather & multi-ethnic fellowship!!
Great clear & cool 10 K at Pac Grove, & great to see bob flying along i style as usual.!
It was good to see you this morning...congrats also to your daughter who ran the 5k!!!One more run in the rain; cold hands, but wrm cardio; Merry Post-Christmas to All.!
5 miles on disc golf (Goathill famed course) in San Diego, very hilly; started to pull my right hamstring. Got to see if I can be together enough to go thru the 'Double.'
Cold & enjoyable..!
5 in old runing shoes; forgot the regulars!
Old running shoes can cause injuries...be careful...are you guys running the Double?Covered the distance, left ankle pain came up; actually, tendonae at top of foot (ankle-foot junction feel pinched). Let's see about tomorrow.
Pleasant ride to Morgan HIll, strong headwind on return; stopped briefly for small coffee sample..
7 miler, decent energy today, & carpentry (pethouse crafting afterwards (( college fund hobby for my girls))!
6 miler, great feeling, but have to watch sore tarsus? knob on ankle that's severely pronated & protrubent ,tends to rub against the shoe, making for 'electric' sensations.
Easy 5 miler, sore right ankle, due to brickwork & lifting heavy loads yesterday pm. Hope tomorrow is better.
7 miler, decent energy, somewhat sore ankle (tarus pronation condition).
Nite 4 mile run, temps kind, contrasted to most of day in sun at fundraiser for library project.
Covered 7 miles today; energy drop, slogged thru; will see what tomorrow brings..
28 miler, pleasant diversion from the runs, really need to purchase a new pair; temps ideal.!
One more true LSD run, Joe Henderson would be proud.!
Good going Jim. Maybe we should now refer to LSD as LED (Long Easy Distance)...takes the terminology from the 60's to the 2000's.28 mile bike ride, somewhat tired, looking forward to a good run tomorrow
Beautiful & fresh Portland weather; 3 mile run & 1 mile walk inc. prune picking adventure.!
7 miler, feeling a little more energetic; saw 3 deer on bike path; seems alot of energy present.!
Bike towards Moragan Hill, loaded up with corn on return-- strong headwind..
5 miles in the heat.! Jut back from Scrabble event in Portland..
Thanks for the package I received today from you...you and your twin brother have done some amazing things!Bike towards Morgan Hill & corn load up on return, more aerobic challenge.!
Felt strong for once!! Early am run is better; or was it having two servings of avocado last nite.?
Out in the wind towards M. Hill; stopped to buy 13 ears fresh corn (an Iowa alumnus favorite); tough, weighty, and strong headwind on return..
Back from Minnneapolis; no internet access during USA Scrabble "Word Cup Chpshp;" twin bro Ron finished 4th & myself 12th. Did daily 4 milers in humidity after competition around a nearby lake. Still fatigued from air travel, shuffled a 6 miler this afternoon.. look forward to more normative temps.!!
7 miler; done slowly; starting on beta blocker; VA cardio staff state my ejection indexis lower than expected; not into meds, but let's see.
Started a little late, hotter than expected, windy condition helped moderate the hillside temps.
7 miler with tolerable temps.!
4 Mile Run in Palo Alto after eyes dilation at VA. Still good to perspire.!!!
$ Mile brisk walk with daughter; she had some knee pain, and the thermals at Noon were not friendly.!
-towards M Hill; very windy on return; had added weight of 20+ lbs. of orchard cherries.!
Hot but mostly enjoyable; strong headwind on return, 1st class rip on shin from barbed palm tree/bush on stopping to recycle a moment at Coyote. C[est la vie-Asi es la vida.!!
9Miles in heat against S. Sose hills; almost too hot, but finished LSD style as usual.!
Ran easily with a few youthful gals, windy but enjoyable.. kind of regret not going down to M Hill for the parade & 5 K run; glad Bob made it there.!
6 miles against the hills; started somewhat late, but able to pace thru the heat.
Arid andwarm in Boise; in 80's, but path network along Boise River highly enjoyable, and did not feel uncomfortable.. very friendly folks; lots of cyclists also.
7 miles in Idaho dry heat; beautiful down by river.. not much around a pc to log.
Hello Bob,
Don't know if my prior response got thru, however at this time temps range from the low 70's in am to high 80's during the day. Much is mitigated by running, cycling, etc onthe beautiful path network (paved) down by the Boise River. It's an arid climate, so easy to tolerate.. Been teeeeeeeeelling some of the run organizers about UJENA; will put Allen, the Robie Crk Half Marathon documentarian in touch,. Best, Jim6 Miler, dry & hot Idaho weather; semi-friendly Canadian geese on canal bank. Haven't been around the internet to post workouts..
5 Mile run, with Liz again; included some racewalking, as she has a strained ligament? in the ankle. Saw lots of ground squirrrels and happy rabbit.!
One of the real joys of running/walking...appreciating the flora and fauna. Recently moved my main workouts to the morning and has made that aspect even better.
Sounds like a nice run...BTW you won $50 again for posting every day for the week ending May 20th...check is in the mail!!!Did 28 miles towards Morgan Hill; very hot & windy on return; loaded with 20+ lbs. of orchard cherries.!
2 hours on bike, terriffic weather.!
The weather has been nice here in Northern California for running and biking...
Kind of post-facto Bob, but very informative SJ Merc article.. hopefully it will be another catalyst to get more folks in motion 9 miler on windy day on May 24th.
Could you please put it on the the weekly log list
Ran 10 easy Miles, trying to avoid the ankle issue.
Take care of your ankle...I take magnesium for ankle issues plus use tape...works for me....
Thanks Bob; will go more on the magnesium in fresh and pill form, usually most found on leafy greens Covered the distance slowly, had ankle cramp last mile; will go for the bike tomorrow.!
Take care of that ankle...mine was bothering me a bit today but not the hamstring...aging....Ran/shuffled thru the CAstrovile Artichoke 5 K soft, crumble canal roads with daughter Liz, who won her Div. I place 2nd in a happy tortise 28 min. Great fellowship. Presented the HaNoi Intl. Marathon Fench Press finishline foto copy framed to the race director; now mementarily wealthy in artichokes.!
I ran the Artichoke 10k three years ago with a friend...it was cool running through the fields...sounds like you had a good time!Easy 3 Miler as prep to the 5 K tomorrow.
Felt light; plan to run the Artichoke 5 K-Castroville with daughter Elizabeth on Sunday am..
I like the Artichoke races...I ran the 10k there a couple of years ago...right through the fields...Good luck!--Wow! cycling seems so easy compared to the run ..talked to Don Kardong the other year, & Don does alternate runs & bike rides.
Not as hot as yesterday. kind of low energy, but not oppressively hot. Energy returned later in the afternoon.
Did 7 Miler, cold this am; no prior coffee; really notice the lack of 'zip energy.' Was fasting for subsequent blood draw-lipid panel check.
cycle to Morgan Hill- windy on return!
Hello Bob, I didi the Monterey Rd. run; at time do the trail; sometimes snag oranges Ran twice today on 3 hours sleep from direct drive back from Boise; beautiful there, but hot these last days; the "Robie Creek Mtn Half-Marathon" was a supreme challenge/test given the 90 degree + temps in the canyon. Quads barely function; better days ahead.!
Great weather, truly fun to run.!
Rainy day run; a ways up Metcalf Rd; air very fresh, wind not so fun; feel very alive.!
5 Miler followed by loading my truck with M. Hill mushroom compost and unloading for a good anaerobic experience. Hope to do a longer one on Friday..
Rainy, but tolerable temps. Left hamstring somewhat strained; will go easy tomorrow. Air so fresh.!
Ride to Morgan Hill & back; eyes alert to any unrecognizable items that could be clues to the disappearance of MH highschooler Sierra Lamar. Buzzard pecking on something organic out in the field, investigated--a large expired sheep; thank 'Dios' it wasn't a person. Do believe athletes have enhanced environmental perception for all reasons..
Felt so much better today, even with low sleep; body is a mystery and a wonder.! (9 MIles )
Real sore back from gardeningd & lifting too much, but was able to do the, kind of mincing--weather terrifffic!
Felt like doing a triathlon in the former days..! Extra energy today; restless over twin brother's cardiac procedure today per fibrilation condition, was invasive,, but he's supine for some more hours & already restless to get up & see about hopeful improvement..
Somewhat rainy, but amazing how the body warms up over the miles.! wil hope for improved weather tomorrow.
Had good energy level today, running lite and easy; every interaction afterwards seemed very positive. Yes! Viva la energia de la vida!!
Very cold ride into wind to Morgan Hill this am. Return was more merciful; stopped for a Starbucks refill & picked a few roadside oranges; only saw one other cyclist; probably half my age.!
Wow! Cold out there, soemwhat revived 2nd half of run, feel better running up some road inclines; maybe system just adjusting to Daylite Svngs change yesterday..
It is going to take me a few days to get used to the time change. Congrats! You worked out and posted every day last week. You win $50. Lets do it again!! Felt light and vital, multitude of creative thoughts percolated up while in easy meditative motion; thinking about presentation at Church Sun. am; hopefully can spark more aerobic interest among those who may become mistaken for hippos if that 1st big step for lifestyle change stays ponderous..!
Good quads workout; actually did some recycling en route; now have a better appreciation how 'sherpas' must feel. Running so. SJ tomorrow against the hills.
Run before cardiac appt. at VA-Palo Alto--cold.!!
Pleasant cycle ride, may be doing more, as last run started to pull calf muscle. Ouch!! jim
Had a good run; energy level high; prior to start, 2 cups coffee & two visits to the lu.!
Running, Coyote Bike Trail & some hillwork on loop. Cool & clear; felt very revitalized.!
Monday 20 mile Bike ride
Tuesday 5 Mile Run
Wed. 6.5 mile run
Th. 8 mile run
Add A New Secret Training Idea

You are running well Jim. Be sure to post all your races here.
Way to fly in the Ave. Giants Half Bob.! Some years back, while still in the 50's, I recall finishing in the same place with the overhead timer in a 1:26. Now at this run/shuffling 65, it would be an achievement to do it under 2 hrs. Slludos on uholding, the "above 60" banner so well.!!
Best,
jim barker.
